What’s with the name ‘One Foot in the Black?”
When firefighters build fireline while keeping ‘one foot in the black’ they are building fireline adjacent to the fire perimeter. When using this tactic there is no unburned fuel between the fireline construction and the main fire through which fire could burn rapidly. The firefighters building direct line have the unburned fuels in the fire to use as a potential safety zone. Keeping ‘one foot in the black’ is a strong position in that firefighters can quickly pivot to safety. We strive to help our clients ‘keep one foot in the black’ by guiding them towards preparations they can take to have good outcomes during wildland fires.
